Confirmation from Marvel President! Captain Americas Shield in the background of Iron Man movie!

UPDATE from President of Marvel Kevin Fiegn:

Feige confirmed that it is definitely the Captain America shield that was seen in IRON MAN on Tony Stark’s work-station as he’s removing his suit for the first time.  It’s just an Easter Egg and probably won’t have anything to do with the Capt. America story.

So there ya go. We Told you!

UPDATE

The much debated image now in motion, tell your friends

————————————–

Ok this is pretty geeky. I know we all love to find easter eggs in movies that make us shout for joy and go crazy. So you all tell me what you think of this. There are a couple web sites that have pointed this out.

Do you see it? Look under Starks arm pit… Still having trouble? Well here…

There it’s circled for you now. Is that what you think it is? Is that what I think it is? Is that what everyone else thinks it is?! I dont know. Are we seeing what are are supposed to be seeing, or is it our overly exaggerated imaginations at work here? Are we making it up in our head because it’s what we want to believe? Remember a few years ago and the Leprechaun spotted in a tree in Alabama a few years back?

Is this mass hysteria? Or did the filmmakers throw that in there as a nod to the real American hero? Here is an explination I’ve found:

The shield is actually red, white, and blue, although you can’t see the red in the photo. But if you see the scene in the theater, the shield is actually there and very identifiable. It looks like it is half-constructed and being built by Tony Stark, but you can definitely see the unique star. It is a round shield with circular red, white, and blue stripes. What does this mean?

Apparently Captain America was actually given his round shield from the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization when he was found in modern times, which could make sense in this universe. Maybe Tony Stark has been building a shield, for whatever reasons, and eventually S.H.I.E.L.D., who was revealed at the end of the movie, will find out about it at a future point and suggest they give it to Captain America for his use. And this means maybe it will involve some sort of awesome Tony Stark technology instead of just being a metal object he throws around. How about that for a concept?

This is just one geeks interpretation over at firstshowing.net. Another website suggests that the shield wasn’t even added until the movie hit theaters which is why you don’t see it in the exact same shot from the trailers of the movie. You can read that right HERE.

Whatever the case may be I am sure it will be put in the X-files. I would like to think that it is Captain Americas shield. But it just doesn’t make sense to me why Stark would be working on it right now. Maybe it doesn’t need to make sence. Maybe… just maybe it is what we think it is. I don’t know. What do you all think?

Final Analysis

We here at Geektyrant believe that what we see is Captain Americas Shield!! Tony Starks father created weapons during World War II. He was the one that created the shield! or possibly obtained it during that time. Which is why Tony has it in the first place. Why did Tony Stark have it out on his work table? As a reference for the suit he was building of course. In my opinion parts of the suit are made out of the same metal that the shield was made from. So there you have it folks! If you don’t believe it you don’t have to but its obvious that Marvel is connecting all of their characters together in this world to give the fans what they want. These are things they want us to catch, things they hope the fans spot. If we don’t spot them where is the extra fun. I also want to point out that the shield was not there in the preview of the movie. Which means they did add it in post-production. Why would they do that? Because it is the Shield people!

  2. Dr Archeville on May 12th, 08

Could be Cap’s shield. Or it could be a Vitruvian Man-type graphic, showing the proportions of the armor.

“And this means maybe it will involve some sort of awesome Tony Stark technology instead of just being a metal object he throws around. How about that for a concept?”

\not an original concept, they tried it in the comics in the early 70’s, it was stupid.
\\What makes Cap unique is that he doesn’t fit in with the technology, but is still superior to it.
\\\No opinion on the picture, work blocks it.

  4. Gary on May 12th, 08

I dont know. I checked the trailer on apple.com and that object is not there in that version. It was probably put in post production. Given that its prob more credible that is it the shield. Just a little easter egg for those who go movies frame by frame.

From what people are saying it was put in during post production, hjust like gary said which would this whole thing some weight. It does make things fun though. Who know how marvel is going to put this all together they are creating a giant Marvel movie world! Its pretty cool.

  11. Mazer on May 12th, 08

Do you think marvel will ever do their “Civil War” story line (i.e. Captain America vs Iron Man)?

  12. QuadGlacier on May 12th, 08

Marvel has announced Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and Avenger movies.

It’s obviously the shield, and another means of tying all the bits together for the Avengers film in 2011 or whenever the time was announced to be.

  15. cypher on May 12th, 08

could be easily explained as a metallurgical analysis that Tony was asked to do by some government suit. or maybe he just wanted Cap’s shield. Or maybe some combination of the both: he wanted Cap’s shield to analyze the metallurgy for how to make the suit. something like that.

  16. Templar on May 12th, 08

“not an original concept, they tried it in the comics in the early 70’s, it was stupid.”

Nowhere near as stupid as the properties of both Captain America’s shield and the Super-Soldier serum defying all attempts at replication.

Tony Stark creating Captain America’s shield in an Avengers movie would be awesome, I agree.

  22. Tad on May 12th, 08

Marvel has announced the Cap movie as The First Avenger: Captain America so it sounds like Cap predates Iron Man in this universe as in the comics. Therefore the shield would be around for Stark to mess with. Possibly Stark bought the original shield as a collector. He’s got the bucks.

SHIELD seemed like an organization that was new to Stark and certainly to Pepper. I doubt it was an official request.

“Damn dont you half nerds know anyhting? Reed Richards made Capntain Americas shield by accident.” - SadidaKhan on May 12th, 08

Don’t go around spreading false information. Steve Rogers already wielded his shield during World War 2, and it was presented to him by President FDR. And if you want to badmouth others, learn how to spell first.

Here’s a link, research first before posting. http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix2/maclainmyron.htm

  27. retcon on May 13th, 08

    Lrn2Wiki:

“. . .through retroactive continuity, it is established that the shield was presented to Rogers by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The shield is created by an American metallurgist named Dr. Myron MacLain, who had been commissioned by the US government to create an indestructible armor material to aid the war effort. MacLain experiments with vibranium, an alien metal found only in Wakanda that has unique vibration absorption properties.
During one of his experiments to fuse vibranium with an experimental iron alloy, MacLain falls asleep and awakens to find the experiment a success. However, this is due to an unknown catalyst entering the process during his slumber, and he is unable to duplicate the result. The vibranium-iron alloy mix is then poured into a mold for a tank’s upper hatch to create the disc shape and painted to become Captain America’s symbol.”

As for the pic, yeah that might be his shield. Why Stark would have it is anyone’s guess; maybe they’re making him “Myron MacLain” for the purposes of the movies.

  30. jeffro on May 13th, 08

    from wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America’s_shield

“When Rogers returns from suspended animation, Tony Stark “improves” the shield by incorporating electronic and magnetic components in it so that Rogers could even control it in flight. However, Rogers soon discards the additional components because he finds that it upsets the balance of the shield when thrown, which is Rogers’ ultimate preference.”

    and…

“After Rogers’ death, Stark takes over custody of the shield, with one replica on display in a museum, and another replica being buried with Rogers. The real one is kept by Stark to be used by the new Captain America, whenever they deem it appropriate to train a new one. After failing to find a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent capable of throwing it properly, Stark offers the shield to Clint Barton, who does manage to throw it but declines Stark’s offer to become the new Captain America. The shield is subsequently stolen by the Winter Soldier, who did not want anyone else to carry the shield.”

  40. Grubb on May 15th, 08

Sorry, I don’t mean to nerd all over the place. But Captain America’s Shield is made out of a material called “Vibranium” where as Iron Man’s suit is a Gold-steel alloy (or something to that effect). Also, Captain America’s shield was made by “Dr. Myron MacLain” not Howard Stark (Tony Stark’s father). Any “Insider at Marvel” would definitely know these things.

Sorry buddy, but wishes are not horses. That’s not the shield.

  41. Dr. Venkman on May 15th, 08

We all know that Caps Shield is made out of Vibranium. Who knows what marvel is doing in this world they are creating, maybe parts of the suit are Vibranium because the whole interworkings of the suit was not Gold Titanium Alloy. Ya never know. The Shield was put in during Post Production so that has to say somthing.

  42. Anonymous on May 15th, 08

“During one of his experiments to fuse vibranium with an experimental iron alloy, MacLain falls asleep and awakens to find the experiment a success”

The Experimental Iron Alloy mentioned here is Adamantium by the way. The shield is an Adamantium/Vibranium alloy.

“However, this is due to an unknown catalyst entering the process during his slumber, and he is unable to duplicate the result.”

According to some old material it has been aluded to that the “unknown catalyst” was magic. Specifically Norse Magic, as from the hands of Odin, who had issues w/ the Nazis and their endevors into the Occult and attempts to gather Norse Artifacts.

Has anybody notified Stephen Colbert? I hear he has been on the look out to reclaim this.

  44. Daniel on May 15th, 08

Does anybody else think that you people are reading too much into this? does it matter where its from, who made it, why its there, or what time it was there? The shield is laying on the table or it is not. Very simple. Marvel is linking all of the avengers movies together so maybe their putting it in there as a little easter egg. I think it is there looks very much like it.

  45. thiisme on May 15th, 08

Doesn’t make sense. You saw the Shield but didn’t notice the Claws of Wolverine.. it’s also on top of the table, left side, behind Stark…

  46. ryan on May 15th, 08

I haven’t had time to research the history of Captain America’s shield. I’ve been busy having sex with real women. But it sure looks neato.

  47. Grailwolf on May 16th, 08

“Any “Insider at Marvel” would definitely know these things.”

Grubb, I’m not saying that the “insider” is real, but I’m afraid your argument doesn’t hold water. The original post about the insider lists things that happened in the universe of the Iron Man movie. This is different than what happens in the Marvel comics universe. For one thing, Tony made the first Iron Man armor in Afghanistan rather than Viet Nam.

If the inside source was explaining how it will turn out that Stark has the shield *in the movies* then your refutation using facts from the comic books doesn’t work.

That said, I suspect (like many others) that this is just a cool easter egg that doesn’t necessarily have any explanation. But I also agree that it doesn’t hurt to speculate.

  48. mrsleep on May 16th, 08

That really DOESN’T look like Capt. America’s shield.

And who the hell goes frame by frame looking for stuff like this?

  49. leotfreshy on May 16th, 08

well have you noticed in the film Monster INC, that boo picks up a few toys to give to “kitty”, one of the items was a Finding nemo toy. Then the film comes out!

so im guessing that marval are doing the same thing.

  50. Jimmy Baker on May 17th, 08

I remember that Tony Stark modified Cap’s sheild with some techie stuff , so Captain America could do those fancy boomerang tricks with his sheild. Also,Marvel comics timeline/history concerning their characters is so knotted up,it’s really a monumental task to really bother to straighten that biz out.

If the confirmation is true then that’s awesome. But, it’s not the same material as the suit. Stark says twice that the armor is a gold-titanium composite (once when redesigning the suit before the party he goes to and the other time when he’s reading the newspaper).

  63. Jess on May 19th, 08

If you save the photo, and zoom in towards the “shield” you can see that their isn’t a full star there. My thought that it isn’t Captain America’s shield, but it could be the lighting.

  69. MTA on May 20th, 08

I’ve really tried to not post anything on this thread, but then I read it all again and just had to point something out to everybody. Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics are NOT the same thing. Both entities use Marvel characters to do ONE thing, to make money. Marvel Studios will do this by combining winning properties with other potential properties. What I mean is, if it sells tickets to say Tony Stark made Cap’s Shield, then he made the shield. I do not put it past Marvel Studios to place a vague impression of the shield in Iron Man. The two characters are the pinacles of the Avengers and as everyone knows the Avengers will be Marvels next huge undertaking. I would suggest also looking for similar things in the upcoming Hulk movie. Marvel Studios will make more and sell more if they can keep all properties tied together.

Now, as I said earlier Marvel Studios is not Marvel Comics or vice versa and no matter how much the “fanboys” may want origins to gibe or characters to look like they do in the four color world, it will never happen. Also consider this, anything that may come directly from “continuity” is much more likely to come from the Ultimate line, which considering the casting of Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, seems most likely to me.

  70. ron on May 20th, 08

When I first saw the clip, I looked for the shield and found it in the top right corner, it is very faint and moves into focus as the camera pans right. Then I looked below and found the shield of debate. Two shields?

  71. kyle on May 21st, 08

I saw the same thing Ron saw, shield on back right corner, it shows just 3/4 of it very faded but that looks more like it then the big shield under his armpit!

  72. Aric W. on May 24th, 08

Originally, Dr. Myron MacLain was attempting to perfect an indestructible alloy, as strong as the legendary ‘adamantine’ which Hercules’ Golden Mace was made from. He was hoping the alloy would provide a distinct advantage in the armor of American war machines during World War II. While he was asleep as a result of his exhaustion, an unknown factor caused the metals he was working with to bond.

The alloy was poured into the shape of a discus. Some sources say that MacLain chose the discus shape because of its versatility, while other say that he used an existing cast designed for tank hatches. Presumably the titanium steel bolts used to fasten straps to the disc were also forged at this time. It was painted in its familiar red-white-and-blue pattern using titanium oxide paint (though it has been repainted since then). Later, the shield was presented to Captain America by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Later, MacLain’s attempts to duplicate the shield minus Wakandan Vibranium and the mystery factor resulted in true Adamantium. Because of this historical link, the unknown substance composing the shield is sometimes refered to as “proto-adamantium”.

The shield was on Rogers’ person when he crashed in the arctic and was frozen in a state of suspended animation. After being revived by the Avengers, Tony Stark made several electronic and magnetic improvements upon the shield which allowed Rogers to control the discus in flight. The additional components threw off the balanace of the shield when thrown, however, and Rogers soon removed them.

  73. Woodgatejack on May 29th, 08

I’m not sure about the thing on the table behind Stark, on closer inspection the red ring around the edge seems to be raised (imagine a frying-pan) and the center red ring and blue circle with the star on seemed to be raised also. The one on the wall near the stairs and the sink seems more like it.

What I don’t get, is that if the Iron Man movie is taking place in modern times (ie right now) how could his dad have worked on the Manhattan Project and other World War II stuff? It’d make more sense if it was his GRANDfather…but his dad wouldn’t be old enough. Unless he worked on the Manhattan Project when he was like 5. Conceivably his dad could be in his 80’s, or 90’s (if he were still alive), and had Tony at a late age, but judging from the pic of them together shown during the faux documentary at the awards ceremony, his father is the usual sort of age difference between a father and son…ie his dad looked twenty-five or so years older.

  78. Tz on June 13th, 08

I believe captain Americas shield was originally created by Dr. Myron MacLain during WWII when he created the compound vibranium by accident. This was the antecedent to adamantium in fact. Some say it was the original vibranium that the shield was made of but its a hazy line between that and calling it secondary adamantium.

  79. redrob on June 14th, 08

I would say that it is the shield, true it could be a blurred diagram if it werent for the red and white rings that can be scene around it in the still shot. I have no problem beleiving that Stark, being who he is and knowing his habits in how he buys things on a whim, would buy the shield for his private collection, perhaps for study or maybe just to have. Who’s to say cap wasnt one of tony’s childhood heroes?

    |Who’s to say cap wasnt one of tony’s childhood heroes?|

He was Tony’s Hero, watch Avengers Two. It’s animated, you can rent it in your local video store.

In the current avengers timeline-which includes the Ultimates and the most recent animated movies- Steve Rogers didn’t HAVE the sheild in 1945. (also, if he did in some timelines, and it was just an adamantium/iron-vibranium alloy sheild, then it was JUST a sheild.) There is no reason Tony Stark can’t be playing around with sheild technology, either for his past weapons division tech (soldiers DO get shot at, so a high tech sheild could be VERY useful to them) or for a possible integration into his suit.

It seems likely that we should look for a high tech sheild to be present in the new Captain America movie.

Captain America hasn’t been brought out of stasis yet. In the comics he didn’t show up until the team was mostly put togther. They were happy because Bruce Banner hadn’t made any progress replicating it.

BTW. He IS working with Super Soldier serum in the new movie.

And boys…They already confirmed that it’s Cap’s sheild…what are you even arguing about?
