Wild Image From SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE and Filmmakers Discuss Film's Five New Universes

That image above of the various Spider-Characters battling the villain spot in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is so freakin wild! I love it! The visuals awesomely pop and imagining that scene playing out in my head is just insane. The setting of that scene in the image above is the India-inspired Mumbattan, which is one of five new universes that will be introduced in the film.

When talking about the film during an interview with Empire, producer Chris Miller explained: “Our contract with the audience is to bring them something they’ve never seen before. The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension. This is about Miles heading off into others.”

When talking about those new universes. co-director Joaquim Dos Santos explained that they basically made five films in one: “Each world is a robust place. We’ve essentially made five films in one.”

The new universes include Gwen’s Earth-65, with its distinctive watercolor palette; the India-inspired Mumbattan; Nueva York, the home of Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O’Hara; the punky New London, inhabited by Daniel Kaluuya’s Hobart “Hobie” Brown a.k.a. Spider-Punk; and then there’s a secretive fifth dimension that’s being kept tightly under wraps for now.

Writer and producer Phil Lord promises that “It goes hard,” and that “the visuals will be jaw-dropping.” Mile Morales voice actor Shameik Moore went on to tease: “I will say that this story tops the first one. If the sky was the limit last time, the sky is now the floor. We’re stepping on it and looking at Jupiter!”

So that all sounds freakin’ rad! The film follows Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, “plunged into the multiverse where he joins forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-folks to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.”

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, “Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

The film will consist of 240 characters that will be swinging around in this movie, and the cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ dad Jefferson Davis; Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mom Rio Morales; Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman; Jorma Taccone as Vulture; Rachel Dratch; Shea Whigham; Greta Lee; andJason Schwartzman as Spot.

The movie is being directed and produced by Justin K. Thompson, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Kemp Powers. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Christina Steinberg are also producing. Lord and Miller will also be credited as writers on the film, along with David Callaham.
